Vigorous Defense Against Public Corruption Charges

One of the risks every government official or employee faces is the potential to be accused of violating the public’s trust. The media thrives on stories of government scandal and law enforcement may be compelled to devote extensive resources to breaking and winning your public corruption case.

At Sacco Tyner we are veterans of numerous high-profile cases and demanding investigations into complex allegations. If you need an attorney with the proven ability to represent you well in public and in the courtroom, if necessary, contact us today for a consultation.

Public Corruption is a Major Problem in NYC: Tougher Penalties on the Horizon

The Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption recently uncovered numerous abuses of power by New York City politicians. The commission declared public corruption to be an “epidemic,” particularly with regard to pay-to-play abuses involving procurement fraud.

Investigative authorities have paid close attention to potential campaign contribution abuse involving State Assembly members and lobbyists. According to the Moreland Commission, 19 lawmakers have been indicted on corruption charges since 2003. This helps to explain why the State Integrity Investigation, which ranks states based on their commitment to government integrity, gave the State of New York a “D” grade for public corruption risk.

The prevalence of recent public corruption cases in the Five Boroughs, including The Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn, could lead to more stringent penalties for abuses of political power. The Moreland Commission called on state political leaders to strengthen existing criminal laws and provide prosecutors with new tools, including tougher penalties, to fight corruption and self-dealing. Additionally, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s latest budget proposal calls for stronger criminal statutes to address public corruption.
